Approach

I photographed my first wedding in 2011 and I have shot around 250+ of them since. The approach has not really changed in that time: stay out of the way, let the day happen at its own pace, and photograph it as it actually is rather than as a list of set-ups.

Portraits are the one part I do ask for, and they are kept relaxed and quick. Making people feel comfortable in front of a camera is most of the job. The rest is watching for the moments that were going to happen anyway.

The work has been recognised internationally along the way, including three Fearless Awards, a place in This is Reportage's Top 100 Documentary Wedding Photographers in the World in 2022, and finals at the British Photography Awards in 2022 and 2023. The awards are markers rather than the point. The couples are the point.

I am originally from Scotland and have lived in Newcastle for more than twenty years, with my wife, two children and the dog. Outside of weddings you will find me on a Northumberland beach, at a gig, on a golf course, or out late chasing the aurora.
